My work focuses on the theme of labour; consisting of woodblock prints, which vary in size from two by eight inches to four by eight feet,  which I have carved by hand. Through the process of making the prints, I allow my work to form organically on its own: I do not "correct" mistakes, but rather allow them, working with resists to make it impossible to pull identical prints. Each line is reproduced directly onto the plate, allowing a commitment to the plate and to physical labour, reflecting investment and thus depth of thought and understanding. My concepts are developed through working, and when Ireach the end I can claim an intimacy with my pieces which cannot be claimed by someone who pushes a button: using a machine to achieve a "perfect" line shows a dedication to form of the work, but not to its content: it lacks the intimacy of the handmade.

The investment of labour helps to give a piece its meaning and therefore carries in it the conception of art itself: the manifestation of thought, careful planning, and the adaptation required
when the piece inevitably does not work out as planned. The resulting flexibility allows for adaption and evolution both in a piece and in myself, and therefore the image of the master in the workshop who outsources detailing to their students perpetuates the image of the assembly line: art, like the production of all objects, reflects an aspect of identity, for better or worse.
